When it comes to embroidery, artist Diana Yevtukh goes a stitch above the rest. Choosing to display her surreal textile art outside of the standard hoop, she seamlessly fuses her pieces with nature and places them on trees. The results are striking. Yevtukh produces a colorful combination of motifs, from floral patterns to thread paintings of a human eye and heart.
Each tree embroidery is clad in bright tones that stand in eye-catching contrast to the dark bark. But despite these rich hues, Yevtukh has placed the stitching so that it sits beneath the surface of the bark and obscures her designs. It's as if the embroidery is hiding in plain sight. Once you discover Yevtukh's handiwork, however, you'll wonder how you ever missed it.
Yevtukh defies categorization of her creative process. “What I do as an artist,” she tells My Modern Met, “is that I look at the world around me, at the materials, techniques, and technologies, and I spot an empty space and a combination of materials to ignite my imagination.” This leads her to work in whatever way feels appropriate for what she is trying to achieve—whether it’s a fluid acrylic painting or a meticulously stitched piece. “This is astonishingly fun,” she explains, “combining wood, embroidery, sculpture, concrete, and stone to create cohesive beautiful looks.”
The openness of Yevtukh’s artistic approach speaks to the larger mission of her work. “Maybe it sounds naive,” she admits, “but the simplest desire to fill my surroundings with beauty is at the origins of most things I do.”
Artist Diana Yevtukh stitches embroidery and seamlessly fuses it with nature by placing the surreal designs on trees.
In addition to embroidery, Yevtukh creates fluid paintings that are inspired by natural landscapes.
